The Actual Difference Between Distilled and Soft Water

Even though some people may not differentiate the two, there is a huge difference between soft and distilled water. In addition, the two has both pros and cons depending on how they are used. However, if you know the actual difference between soft and distilled water, it can be very easy for you to decide the type of water to use in what application. In addition, getting the water quality checked is also a good start because it will help you determine the type of water available and what you need to do in the future.

Distilled Water

Distilled water does not contain any impurities or minerals because they are removed via a process known as distillation. During distillation, the water is heated to its boiling point for water molecules to separate from other elements. The water vapor obtained is then condensed and collected to obtain distilled water. It is important to understand that liquids and solids have different boiling points. As a result, distilled water is pure water because it’s separated from other impurities and minerals.

Uses of distilled water

This type of water has a number of uses but it is mainly used for chemical and medical uses. Having all the minerals and impurities removed, distilled water is safe and pure for use in medical applications. Also, people can also drink this water although it lacks essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, and fluoride. Finally, distilled water is used in wet batteries to top up. This water is ideal because it is pure. If another type of water is used, there is a high chance that it will leave residues on the cathode or anode plates reducing efficiency and eventually ruining the battery.

Soft water

Soft water refers to water that does not have any minerals. Initially, the water was hard but after being softened via the filtration process, ion exchange or any other ideal process, all the minerals have been removed. The mineral elements contained in hard water makes it hard for it to lather easily with soap. Therefore, it is not ideal for household chores. Also, it can damage plumbing and appliances because it clogs the pipes.

To soften hard water magnesium and calcium ions are replaced by sodium. During the ion exchange process, a resin tank that has beads is used to attract the magnesium and calcium ions thus making the water soft.

Uses of soft water

This type of water can be used to complete household chores like cleaning e.g. dishes, appliances or laundry because it lathers easily with soap and does not cause any buildup on your appliances. You can also use it to clean your skin or hair (washing) because it does not have impurities which can make your skin to crack or your hair to tangle and become rough.

Finally, soft water may contain some elements which might be lacking in distilled water. As a result, distilled water is purer than soft water although you can use the two types of water on a wide range of applications.
